Challenge

Users don't understand how to add cards to different AOIs or how to link cards to multiple AOIs.

Create a more intuitive process for adding new cards to AOIs and linking cards to multiple AOIs.

* AOI: Area of Interest

Kickoff

During the kickoff meeting, the project manager and I discussed the requirements and what are the potential roadblocks the users are facing while getting me familiar with the product.

Right after the meeting, I made a project plan to list out every detail I will go through with the expected timeline.

Project Plan

Usability Testing

I started the project by doing 3 usability tests. Mainly, I want to validate the assumption that the issue is coming from the unclear user flow, and also see if there are potential roadblocks we didn't notice in the beginning.

  • Test with 3 first time users

  • 2/3 of users indicated they can not associate the 2nd part with the 3rd part, that’s why our user can’t navigate the adding cards flow smoothly. They actually don’t know the cards are there for the particular AOI.

  • 2/3 of users encounter the same roadblock when they finished add the current card and try to add a new card. Users need to hit the save/cancel before they can add the next card.

Sketch

Right after I validated the root cause, I started sketching out a few possible solutions to it.

I first think of it's like putting all the cards under an AOI folder, so I draw a folder layout, but with this approach, it didn't really solve the problem that users can add one card for several different AOIs at the same time.

Usability Testing(Part 2)

Yes! Part 2! I did another 3 usability tests on my new idea and see how it goes. It turns out 3/3 of people understand how to process with the new flow and feel much smoother adding extra AOIs for the same card.

I took all the wonderful feedback into the next iteration and apply the colors. I added the multi-selection boxes in from of each AOI, so that users can easily understand that they can have multiple selections on AOIs, then pick the cards in the middle which has a preview on the side, so users know exactly what they are adding to.

That's All!

So I finished the project with a detailed handoff PDF for their developers listing the default state, Error state, font/color applied, images used,...etc.

So...yeah! Here are the final wireframes for the project.

Take aways

This is a freelance experience. Even though it's a relatively small project, it includes all the design processes, and I truly enjoy it.

  • Feedback is truly important! don't ever skip that user testing and miss any chance to get feedback for your project.

  • Writing out a project plan can really help you remember where you are and what you need to do next.

Thank you!

Finally, thank you for your time reading until this point, I appreciate it. Feel free to hit me with your valuable feedback, and I’d love to connect on LinkedIn.
